The Ethiopian Centre for Independent Living are in Ireland to experience at first hand the living experiences of disabled people in Ireland. The six activists and their two support workers are here for a 10 day trip, travelling throughout the Country to meet other people with disabilities and learn how independent living is being developed in Ireland.
While here, they will visit a 3rd level institute, a number of centres for independent living, services for people with learning difficulties, meet supportive politicians, visit Aras an Uachtarain and lots of other interesting and fun events.
Eighteen years ago, the founders of the Irish Independent living movement went through a similar process and visited other jurisdictions to see first hand the impact of independent living on the lives of people with disabilities, to learn from their peers, gain inspiration, share ideas and work in solidarity.
The chairperson of The Galway Centre for Independent Living, Mr. Jack Callanan said “We could not have reached where we are today without the assistance from fellow independent living activists in the USA, UK, Sweden and others.” Mr Callanan wished them well for the remainder of their trip, having experienced the difficulties and understanding the challenges that they will face on their journey to establishing a right for independent living, he stated that the Galway Centre for Independent Living would be willing to assist in any way it could, their efforts to promote a better future for people with disabilities in Ethiopia.
